Hair Extension Aftercare
How to make your extensions last.
Most extension problems are care problems, not installation problems. None of this is difficult. It just has to be consistent.
Washing
- Use a sulfate-free shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner.
- Keep conditioner and oil-based products away from the bonds and roots; they loosen the attachment.
- Rinse thoroughly so nothing is left to build up around the attachment points.
Drying
- Always dry the hair before you sleep on it. Going to bed with wet extensions is the fastest way to matting.
- Dry the roots and the attachment area first.
Brushing
- Brush from the ends first and work your way up to the roots.
- Support the hair at the root with your other hand so you are not pulling on the attachment.
- Brush gently and never force a tangle.
Sleeping
- Tie the hair in a loose braid or a loose ponytail before bed.
- A silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction overnight.
Heat & styling
- Always use a heat protectant.
- Avoid excessive heat. Extension hair cannot repair itself the way growing hair can.
Swimming
- Avoid chlorine and salt water where you can; both dry the hair out.
- If you do swim, wet the hair with clean water first, tie it up, and rinse and condition afterward.
Maintenance appointments
- Book your move-up or re-tape on schedule for your method. Leaving it too long risks matting and breakage.
- Come in for the appointment rather than attempting removal or adjustment at home.
Maintenance
When to come back, by method.
Leaving a move-up too long is the single most common cause of matting and breakage. These are the intervals to plan around.
| Method | What happens | Interval |
|---|---|---|
| Sewn-In Weft | Move-up | 6–8 weeks |
| Micro-Link / I-Tip | Bead move-up | 6–9 weeks |
| K-Tip Fusion | Removal & re-bond | 8–10 weeks |
| Tape-In & Invisible Weft Tape-In | Removal & re-tape | 4–8 weeks |
| Halo & Clip-In | Upkeep | None |
| Ponytail Extensions | Upkeep | None |
Please come in for removal and adjustment rather than attempting either at home. That is where most avoidable damage happens. Compare the methods.
